TEMwindows.com December 2009 Newsletter

“Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning, but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us.”

- Hal Borland

As 2009 comes to a close and 2010 begins, we wanted to take the opportunity to thank each of you for your interest in TEMwindows.com and our product portfolio. Since launching our business in January, we have seen sales grow throughout the year and have enjoyed learning about how our pure silicon grids are helping you in your research efforts.

We wish you all the best for a wonderful holiday season!

New Nanoparticle Separation Device

Designed specifically for nanoparticle separations, SepCon™ Spin Column can fractionate nanoparticles between 2 and 40 nm with recovery of both fractions. Below is visual evidence of how effectively SepCon™ separates 5 nm and 10 nm gold nanoparticles.

Product trials for the SepCon™ Spin Column are continuing to proceed. If you are interested in participating in the free product trial, please complete the form on the SiMPore website.

High-Resolution Imaging on 5 nm Pure Silicon UltraSM®

The TEM image below show quantum dots imaged on a 5 nm pure silicon UltraSM® grid. Under high beam current or after plasma cleaning, the UltraSM® grid provides excellent image resolution of the quantum dot’s detailed lattice structure.

Is There Still "Room at the Bottom"?

The December issue of "Nature Nanotechnology" recognizes the 50th anniversary of Richard Feynman’s famous “There’s Plenty of Room at the Bottom” talk at Cal Tech, which many credit as the first call for the development of a nanoscience and technology field. Whether or not you share this viewpoint, it’s fun to look back at such a candid discussion of the future by a leading scientist, and to see how far we have come since 1959. Feynman was a firm believer in the need to “see” what’s going on at the nanoscale, if we are to truly understand atomic physics, chemistry, and biochemistry, so it’s not surprising that a significant portion of his talk was devoted to electron microscopy.

In his feature article, “Surely you're happy, Mr. Feynman!”, [Nature Nanotechnology 4, 786 (2009).] Michael Segal takes a look Feynman’s predictions and challenges for electron microscopy, and what has actually been accomplished. Although EM has not solved all the mysteries that Feynman envisioned, it has come a long way, achieving a 20-fold increase in resolution since his lecture was given and has uncovered many details of the nanoworld that we take for granted today.

Few of us take full advantage of the power and innovation of modern TEMs, often limited by sample preparation, beam-induced damage, or support materials. Next time you are in front of a $1M TEM, spending an hour or more of your time trying to get that perfect image, we encourage you to think about whether you are really pushing the limits of your tool, and whether any of the innovative grid products that we offer at TEMWindows.com can help you get there!
